MEXICO CITY - Fans in Mexico City are anxiously awaiting the return of the Aztecs from the team's training facility in Cancun. Shut out of the limited free agent market and Santo Domingo's fire sale, the Aztecs emphasized defense and versatility this offseason. As with most Aztecs teams, pitching will be their strength while searching for baserunners their weakness. Players to watch include:
Tolentino Goulart - SP - Standing at 6'7", Goulart anchors the Aztecs' rotation, he's an innings eater and strikeout beast. Has led the league in Innings Pitched two years running and finished 3rd in 2109 Pitcher of the Year voting. Goulart leads a young but talented rotation which features four other pitchers with less than 5 years service time - Michalis, Manual, Cole, and Tuomico. Michalis, Manual and Cole are all products of the Aztecs organization.
Bob Poole - CL - Dominant 5 star lefty closer was reliever of the year in 2109 and will anchor the Aztecs bullpen.
Pat Hardy - RP - Hardy was brought in this offseason from Santo Domingo via Singapore to fortify the bullpen. Naturally a closer, this 4.5 star potential right hander has had no adjustment working outside of the 9th inning this spring.
Rafael Baca - CF - the leagues' 2110 #7 rated prospect, Baca will start in centerfield and should quickly establish himself as one of the leagues best defensive outfielders and base stealers this season. The Aztecs believe that this defensive improvement could yield immediate dividends in their wide open outfield.
Serge Woschinin - 2b - Serge was included in the Jorge Romano trade as an a middling but athletic outfielder. The Aztecs quickly spotted his 5 star potential as a second baseman and he proved to be defensively dominant there this spring landing at a 7 rating in a few short weeks. Will anchor the middle of the infield with star SS slugger Ramon Montes.
The lineup will be further fortified by the "Longball Lopez brothers" - 2109 league ROY catcher Hector Lopez and Ivan Lopez in RF.
Results could be highly variable as the Aztecs again field a very young team with high potential. The Aztecs are often overlooked in a league with highly talented veteran organizations but hope to provide some surprises in 2110.

I'll take that bribe in the form of a 3rd round draft pick.

Mexico City's GM held a presser today to announce that the team would retain the Aztecs name for the 2010 season.
"We think it's a great compliment to a great people and we wear the name with pride" he noted. "There is too much change around this league", complained Mr. Drive, "teams in this league move more often than a traveling vacuum cleaner salesman. We need some stability, some tradition. Plus, I'm too busy with my day job."
Mr. Drive was hit with 3 eggs and a papusa by protesters as he left the press conference.

Bob i think the words you are looking for are "FAKE NEWS.... sad"
I'm hoping my young talent develops and MC can find a winning record - particularly looking forward to seeing how this season plays out. This gives me a baseline challenge anyway. SP is loaded so no surprises there.

I think removing player variability (refusing extensions, signing for under max contract) from the game would be a mistake. It's just one more factor we have to consider which increases the game complexity and gives the players personality. It's really no different than the ootp engine driving which prospects develop and which bust...just part of the game.

agree with Jake - baseline salaries only for now based on Huck's test.

i'm in favor of the plan Huck outlined - seems like good first steps and I agree on slow adjustments - if adjustments are slow it helps with fairness issues outlined by txhorns-
My feeling is that the more we can institute policies to push more players into free agency the better off the league will be financially. The live "market" will do a better job of balancing player value against team cash than OOTP ever will through extensions.

Doesn't exactly fit your question Huck, but I know that hashimoto wanted $20 / mil over 3 year extension and that was based off of his existing salary last season. He then initially asked for $6 mil as a free agent. So inflating the last season of arbitration value may help.
Also agree the baseline salaries should be adjusted right away.

Agree with sentiments here, trade deadline should be extended until final day of playoffs. Puts more focus on the playoffs for immersion and also seems unfair to playoff teams who can't really focus on buying or selling.
I'm also ok banning opt-outs - in reality this is something that players would ask for in contract negotiations and i've never seen that happen so they don't seem to function realistically.

Looks good to me.
FYI - i was also able to resign Goulart at a discount extension. It was odd because at one point he was asking for over 10.5 on an extension, then i went to resign him after the trade deadline and his ask dropped to 7.5 or so...

Mexico City's baseball team is facing mounting political pressure over the team nickname and is considering a rebranding effort this offseason. "We haven't decided yet" noted GM Square Drive, "we have a long tradition as the Aztecs yet we are trying to be sensitive to concerns of the native population."
The organization announced a competition for an alternative but has so far rejected the following fan suggestions:
The Chihuahuas (too embarrasing) The Mariachi (too annoying) The Diablos (Catholic fan base won't root for a team with this name) The Exploding Burritos (Burritos aren't Mexican) The Dirty Sanchez (No explanation of rejection provided)
A final decision will be made shortly after the postseason.

Always enjoy your write ups Huck! Spot on with the Li mexico city signing, MC overpaid to try improve what is consistently the league's most horrid OBP and permit another year of seasoning for Baca.

Thanks for the write up Huck - def feel like my pitchers ran into some hard luck last year. Mexico city fans were spoiled by the early league success. Looking for improvement this season, feel like we are moving back in the right direction.

Interesting, that would be quite a swing for Mexico City from last season with no major moves - does the model factor potential player development?

Huck, I'm in favor of the self-managed Salary Arbitration system - i like the graduated system especially on first implementation as that will temper the shock to the organizations a bit.

Wow Huck, that's awesome!!!! Follow-up question, will players always max out their potential position rating given enough innings/ experience?
133
« on: May 04, 2017, 10:39:07 AM »
Thanks Huck! After doing some reading I understand that position ratings are determined by a formula which factors fielding ratings + experience, but also factors position. So if I understand correctly, though this prospect does not have good fielding ratings, he is given a 7 at 1b because the scale is weighted for first basemen? Is that correct? Is he a good fielder or no? http://www.worldbaseballassociation.com/reports/news/html/players/player_4426.html

I've been playing ootp for a while and somehow i have come to realize that I don't have a good understanding of how position ratings combine with fielding ratings to determine overall defensive performance. I'm also unclear which numbers evolve over time, especially relative to prospects.
It seems to me in this draft that a lot of players have lower position ratings than I remember seeing in the past and i'm finding myself uncertain on how to weigh that info.
Would greatly appreciate some thoughts / input!

Lots of good ideas here - slightly wary about the more complex solutions relative to the amount of work on Huck and possible confusion it could cause. i would be in favor of finding a less complex combination of ideas as:
-Reduce seasons at min salary before players hit FA market -Higher league min salary -Rather than eliminate extensions, just limit them to 1 per team per season or 1 extension every 2 seasons (to retain the possibility of having franchise players)
With the last rule alone, i can see that 3 and 4 seasons from now some real talent from my team would be hitting the market.

The question i have about bobadilha: why does the game recommend him as BP / emergency starter? ![Huh ???](http://www.worldbaseballassociation.com/forum/Smileys/default/huh.gif) if you throw 8 pitches and have 8 stamina that's a starter in my book....

Hey Huck - after the season can we take a look as stolen base figures again? My 10 and 11 rated SB guys are between 55-67% successful which seems low, my very unofficial analysis says guys at that level should be closer to 75%.
Anecdotally, in the AL in 2016 there were 2 players with more than 10 CS. In the ABL, there are already 14 players with 10 or more CS. Admittedly, this could be the result of more total attempts - needs analysis. Pretty significant implications on strategy however.

Good lord, was expecting to see some incremental improvement in Mexico City this season but the bottom has fallen out. Have played 75% of my games on the road so hopefully it starts to balance out. Nothing like your big FA pitcher starting 0-6.

I agree this seems like an issue for competitive balance and more concerning may serve to limit quality of free agents entering the market if teams can readily get cash to resign their stars.
While i agree that many of the ideas have easy workarounds - a simple fix is to set a cap on the amount of cash that can be traded by any team during a single season. This would also be a push against cash hoarding and likewise raise the value of money that can be traded by limiting supply.
