The Sao Paulo Toucans defeated the El Paso Thunderbirds, 5-4, in part because of first baseman Tutu Karim. Karim went 3 for 4 with 3 doubles. He drove in 3 runs and scored once for the Toucans. The Thunderbirds, now 6-10, continue their inauspicious start.

Karim had a timely hit for Sao Paulo in the bottom of the seventh. With Sao Paulo trailing 3-1, he turned a 1-2 curveball into a bases-clearing double. It was his 9th double of the season, making it 4-3, Sao Paulo.

"We squandered some opportunities," said El Paso manager AP MP.
