The Detroit Blue Gills got a marvelous performance from pitcher Ethan Atkins. The right-hander kept the Sao Paulo offense from ever getting much traction. The result was an impressive 8-2 Detroit victory at Tokyo Ballpark. Atkins yielded 2 runs over 6 innings to notch the win. He scattered 6 hits, walked 1, and struck out 6. His record improves to 5-10. Malo Thiery recorded the save, making him 1 for 1.
Fremont Gross had a big 3-run home run for the Blue Gills in the bottom of the first inning. With Detroit leading 3-0 and runners on 1st and 3rd, he sized up a sinker from Vicente Espinosa, who led the ABL in innings pitched with 234.1 in 2147, and punished it. The result was his 2nd home run of the season, which put the Blue Gills on top, 6-0.
Said losing manager Casey Blake DeWitt: "Give the Blue Gills credit. They played a better game than we did."
The victory puts Detroit at 36-58.
