The Detroit Blue Gills beat the Chicago Beefs, 5-4. Detroit pitcher and Kawasaki, Japan, native Yoshinori Matsushita led the way. Branko Kuchek, now 2-7, picked up the win in relief. He allowed 2 runs on 2 hits in 2 innings. The Blue Gills move to 37-67 with the win, while the Beefs drop to 64-40.

Joy-shan Pian drove in one run for Detroit. The 22-year old right fielder had a key at-bat in the top of the 11th. With one out and runners on 1st and 3rd, he broke a 4-4 tie with a run-scoring ground out off Joe Madden. It was his 20th RBI of the season.
