The exploits of third baseman Pavla Elovsky, who finished 2nd in the IBL in hits with 207 last year, helped the Melbourne Meteors defeat the Beijing Emperors, 4-2. Elovsky was 4 for 4 with a double, 3 singles, and a walk. Ramón Chávez got the win, improving to 1-0. He pitched 5.2 innings, giving up 3 hits and 2 runs, while striking out 5 and walking 3. Melbourne, at 47-58, sits in 4th place in the Intercontinental Baseball League Asian Division.
With Melbourne leading 1-0 in the top of the second, Elovsky hit a run-scoring single off Beijing hurler Jaime Torres. It was the 67th hit of the season for Elovsky and put his team ahead, 2-0.
"We put a lot of pressure on ourselves," Elovsky told a Melbourne Times reporter. "Sometimes we just need to relax."
