Thunderbirds Fall Short at Puerto Rico, 8-7
|
The Puerto Rico Coqui besoiled an otherwise fine performance by El Paso third baseman António Ribadeneira by beating the Thunderbirds, 8-7, at Ballpark of San Juan. Ribadeneira was 3 for 4 with a home run, 2 singles, and a walk. He drove in 4 runs and scored once. Puerto Rico reliever Chih-hsiung Chiang picked up the win, while Timothy Adamczak took the loss for El Paso. Puerto Rico is last in the Americas Baseball League Latin American Division with a record of 47-62.
The Coqui were down to their last out in the bottom of the ninth inning, when former first round draft pick Vlad Rapava landed a big blow. He turned a 0-1 fastball from Timothy Adamczak into a 2-run single. The walk-off single sent the Ballpark of San Juan denizens into a frenzy and sent the Coqui home with a thrilling 8-7 win.
"Exhilarating win," said Rapava.
