Melbourne Beats Tokyo, 8-3
|
A 3-RBI performance from second baseman Wattas Mwenda, who is tied for 6th in the IBL in doubles with 29, led the Melbourne Meteors to a win over the Tokyo Fitzies, 8-3. The save went to Max Schmalzl, number 10 for him. Melbourne, now 52-61, holds down 4th place in the Intercontinental Baseball League Asian Division.
Afzul Khan had a big 2-run home run for the Meteors in the top of the first inning. With Melbourne leading 1-0 and a runner on 2nd, he got a slider from 24-year old right-handed pitcher Lewis Wedderburn and swatted a home run to left. It was his 7th home run of the season, and more importantly, it put the Meteors ahead, 3-0.
Melbourne manager Bob Meteors was pleased with the team's effort. "Our guys went out there and put good wood on the ball," he said.
